Days 8, 9, 10 – Harrison, AR Motorcycle Ride – Heading to Aunt Imogene’s and then home.

Days 8, 9, 10 – Harrison, AR Motorcycle Ride

We had a nice visit with Roy and Debbie catching up on all family news and we ate some good home cooking. We wished we could have stayed longer but a coconut pie was waiting at Aunt Imogene’s. She needed help eating it so we had to help her out…

It rained last night and was still raining this morning. We had planned to be on the road by 10:00 but waited until almost 11:00 to let the roads dry a bit.

It was a cool morning but warmed up quickly. It seemed that the closer we got to Texas the warmer it got. Today we rode more of scenic Hwy 7 to I-30. Again, there were lots of curves with great views all along the way. We rode through Hot Springs, my favorite city in Arkansas. We didn’t stop this time but if you do have a chance you need to spend time in Hot Springs.

Downtown Hot Springs, Arkansas

There is so much to see and do in Hot Springs. Hot Springs and Hot Springs National Park owe their existence to an array of springs that still supply naturally heated water for thermal bathers. The Fordyce Bathhouse, on famous Bathhouse Row, now serves as the park’s visitor center. From Bathhouse Row to the Gangster Era…  Hot Springs is rich in history.

Lake Hamilton, Hot Springs, AR

The city is also known for many annual events including the Hot Springs Music Festival, Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival, Valley of the Vapors Independent Music Festival, Hot Springs Jazz Festival, Hot Springs Blues Festival, the downtown Bathtub Races and the World’s Shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

I wish we could have delayed our ride by a few weeks.  The fall foliage should have been good then. Fall is a beautiful time of the year to visit Arkansas.

Aunt Imogene lives on Cypress Springs Lake near Scroggins, Texas. It is a scenic area of north-east Texas. There are many scenic motorcycle roads in the area… We arrived at Aunt Imogene’s later that afternoon. We love visiting her for several reasons. We always have such a fun and relaxing time there, playing fun games, sharing memories and stories. Oh and did I mention coconut cream pie and she is just an all around great cook. We always eat too much while there. Another favorite pastime is sitting on Aunt Imogene’s deck enjoying the relaxing view of the lake while being surrounded by beautiful trees.

Aunt Imogene’s back yard on Cypress Springs Lake

We learned a new domino game Imogene called “Indian Railroad” Janet corrected her… The game is called “Mexican Train”… We had a good laugh about that one…

Janet and Aunt Imogene (84 years young)

We took a day off from riding and just enjoyed our time with Imogene and tried to finish off that coconut cream pie. Good time and great food.

Day 10

We were up early, had a good breakfast of biscuits and gravy and then we headed back home after saying our goodbyes. We promised Imogene we would get back sooner next time.

The ride home was through more of scenic East Texas. The down side of today was the temperature got into the mid 90’s. It was so hot that we removed our jackets. When we bought the Olympia Airglide 3 jackets, we hoped we could wear them when the temperature climbed into the upper 90’s.

It was nice to get home after riding 2035 miles over the past 10 days. We rode some beautiful scenic motorcycle roads with good friends, learned more history of the “Trail of Tears”, visited a couple of old forts rich in history, met some nice people along the way and took this opportunity  to visit family on our return ride home. All in all it was a fun ride. We will return to explore the area more in the future.

Ride safe y’all… Hope we meet somewhere down the road…

Day 6 – Harrison, AR Motorcycle Ride: Bull Shoals & Mountain View Ride Combined (207 miles)

Harrison AR, motorcycle touring, motorcycle travel, motorcycle ride

Today is day 6 of our Harrison, AR motorcycle ride. It rained last night and was still sprinkling this morning at 6:00. The roads were still really wet. The rain was to move out of the area by this morning. I was a little concerned about riding twisty wet roads that none of us had ridden before. We left a little later this morning, sometime before 9:00, hoping the roads would dry some. There were a few clouds lingering around and it was a bit cooler because of the rain but the roads were dry, for the most part. The sun soon was out and the temperature climbed into the mid-80’s by the end of the ride.

Ivan, Larry C. Alfred & Larry T at Bull Shoals Dam

I combined the Bull Shoals and Mountain View rides. Because we had so many issues with the GPS miss-routing us on the earlier day’s rides I came up with a backup plan. Combining old and new school, I wrote the directions on a piece of paper for Janet to refer to and verify where the GPS was directing us. This worked really well. The GPS did try to take us on a different route on a couple of occasions. We just ignored the GPS and rode the ride as I had planned it.

White River down stream from Bull Shoals Dam

On the Bull Shoals ride we rode Hwy 65/412/62 to Bellefonte where we turned left onto Hwy 412/62. Hwy 412/62 goes to Yelleville. Just before Yelleville we turned left on Hwy 202. Hwy 202 took us to Flippin where we took Hwy 178 to Bull Shoals Dam.

James Gaston Visitor Center from Bull Shoals Dam

The ride to Bull Shoals Dam we rode through beautiful scenic farm land, across Crooked Creek to Bull Shoals Dam. At the dam we stopped to stretch our legs and take some scenic pictures. Just above the dam was the Bull Shoals-White River State Park James Gaston Visitors Center. We rode up there to tour the center and use the facilities… The Visitor Center had many interesting displays about the history and ecology of the lake. From the observation deck there was a nice view of Bull Shoals Dam, Bull Shoals Lake and the White River. Great photo opts.

Stream by the Country Kitchen Restaurant in Yellville

We continued down Hwy 178 to Hwy 126 back to Hwy 412/62 at Gassville. From Gassvile we rode to Yellville where we ate lunch at the Country Kitchen. After lunch we took a few pictures of the stream by the County Kitchen and then walked down to a biker gift shop that was closed. We did get a picture of Larry C. on his dream machine.

Larry C. on his dream machine…

From Yellville we turned left on Hwy 14 and rode to Mountain View, riding through Harriet, Big Flat and Fifty Six.

In Mountain View we stopped for ice cream. Larry C. can never pass up a chance to eat ice cream. It was a nice break. We need to come back and explore Mountain View some other time when we have more time, as it looked to be an interesting little town with a quaint and charming historic square with unique shops and places to eat.

From Mountain View we turned right onto Hwy 66 to Leslie. At Leslie we turned right onto Hwy 65 which took us back to Harrison and the end of our ride.

Today ended our time in Harrison. In the pasted three days we have ridden some of the most scenic motorcycle roads in the Arkansas and enjoyed meeting some very friendly and interesting people along the way. My one regret is that I did not plan more stops on our rides. We hope to return one day and spend more time exploring the area.

Stuck behind a logging truck.

Tomorrow we will say goodbye to our riding friends, Larry C, Larry T, Shirley T and Alfred. They will be heading home to Alabama and Georgia. Too bad we can’t ride together more often.

Day 5 – Harrison, AR Motorcycle Ride: Jasper Disaster & Twisted Lady Rides Combined and more GPS Confusion.

Today’s Route minus detours. 120 miles

Jasper Disaster & Twisted Lady Rides

It’s another cool morning. The kind of weather I enjoy riding in the most. We were up again at 6:00 and on the road around 8:00. We started with partly cloudy skies turning to clear blue skies and sunshine. The high temperature climbed into the upper 80’s before the day’s end.

Today we are riding the Jasper Disaster and Twisted Lady ride. These rides partly overlap the Eureka Spring ride we didn’t ride yesterday. So we got to ride it today. Combining these two rides made the route look like a figure eight except for a detour caused by me not reading the signs and the GPS trying to route us down a gravel road.

The Jasper Disaster ride between Ponca and Jasper via Hwy 74, mile for mile is the curviest riding route of the 7 motorcycle rides out of Harrison. Traveling down Hwy 43 we ride through Boxley Valley then pick up Hwy 74 just south of Ponca and ride toward Jasper. You know the ride down Hwy 74 will be a good one when you see a sign which says “CROOKED AND STEEP NEXT 14 MILES DRIVE WITH CARE.” Hwy 74 was very scenic, with massive drops in elevation. There was the possibility of seeing deer, turkey, elk and eagles but today there wasn’t any that we saw. Just before getting to Jasper we turned onto Hwy 327 and headed to Parthenon.

The sign says it all…

I thought there was an old store in Parthenon still in business. I had intended to stop and checkout some of the history there. Frank James’ grave is near there and on July 4, 1888 Wash Middleton, AKA Wash Gibbs of “Shepard of the Hills” fame was shot behind the Parthenon store. But there was just a large old building which I’m assuming was the store. It was obvious the store did not exist any longer.

Maybe we should have stopped and explored a bit but we rode on toward Deer. At Deer we turned on to Hwy 16 heading back to Ponca. Because “Goldie” (the Goldwing GPS) had tried to route us down a gravel road earlier I had turned her off and was following signs instead. I miss read a sign and we took a detour. To make matters worse I dropped my bike turning around. No damage done except to my pride and the embarrassment of it. I was not happy.

Lunch…

We eventually made it back to Ponca and had lunch at Buffalo Outdoor Center. We enjoyed visiting with several of the young ladies who served up some good sandwiches, the local judge and several local workers who had dropped in. For a judge he was a nice guy. He told us about several good roads we should ride in the area. Maybe another time…

After lunch we walked over to the Elk Education Center across the street. It was free and had many displays of elk and other animals of the area.

We continued our ride heading south and riding Hwy 74 again from Ponca all the way to Jasper where we picked up Hwy 7 heading north back to Harrison.

Hotel Seville where we wanted to stay in Harrison but were booked

For dinner tonight we walked down to Dixie Café. Dixie’s serves up some good home cookin’ and deserts. It was a good thing the cafe was a ways down the road from the hotel because I ate too much and needed to walk some of it off… Yes, it was that good. A fitting way to end a good day.

In conclusion is was another fun day riding with good friends, over very scenic mountain roads with lots of curves and elevation changes and great weather.

Day 4 – Harrison, AR Motorcycle Ride: Peel Ferry & Eureka Springs Combined Rides and GPS confusion.

Route for today

Getting ready to go. Larry T., Janet, Ivan, Larry C.

Today was another good riding day. The temperature was in the low 40’s and it warmed up to the mid 80’s before rides end. We were up at 6:00 and on the road by 8:00.

On our way to Peel Ferry

There are 7 different rides out of Harrison, AR. Today I combined the Peel Ferry & Eureka Springs routes for what should have been a 228 mile ride. We didn’t ride the route as I had laid it out due to some confusion on my part and being miss directed by the GPS. I learned some new things about my bike’s GPS on this trip… Most of them were not good. In the past we have always traveled from point A to point B with a few via points in between to control our route. For the next three days we will be traveling from point A (Harrison) and back to point A (Harrison) with various via points in between. Not only does the GPS not like going from point A to point A, it got confused several times on the via points and tried to send us down a gravel road, wanted us to make U-turns instead of continuing on or just routed us different. I now know I need to add more via points. Any pointers from Goldwing riders using the older GPS would be greatly appreciated. Enough venting…

Other than the above mentioned problems the ride was a good one. We saw some scenic country and rode some nice twisty roads.

Riding Peel Ferry to Missouri

We headed north out of Harrison on Hwy 7 to Hwy 14 and rode east a very short distance to Hwy 268 north to Hwy 125 where it dead ends at the Peel Ferry. Then we rode the ferry across Bull Shoals Lake into Missouri. The ferry ride was free and a fun break in the ride. We continued on Hwy 125 to Rueter, MO where we turned on to Hwy 160 and followed it to Hwy 76. We took Hwy 76 west to Branson. The route from Harrison to Branson was very scenic with lots of twist and turns.

Crossing river into Branson

We visited Branson the first time last summer a year ago. We sort of knew our way around but then we did get sort of lost. The traffic on Hwy 76 is terrible through the entertainment area so you want to avoid that. Last year we ate at Mel’s Hard Luck Diner several times. We thought it would be fun to eat there again. All the waiter staff sing in between taking and serving your order. The food is as good as the entertainment.

Janet and Shirley relaxing before climbing back on the bikes…

After lunch we looked at some of the shops and took our time getting back on the road.

Our route to Eureka Springs was again very scenic over great motorcycle roads. We left Branson headed south on Hwy 65. We then turned west onto hwy 86 then picked up hwy 21 to Hwy 62. When we stopped for gas we decided to skip stopping in Eureka Spring. After a detour caused by me and the GPS we continued on… heading south on hwy 23. Again the GPS was taking us in an unexpected way and was causing a lot of concern and confusion. So we decided to just head back to Harrison via hwy 412 skipping the most southern part of our route for the day.

In conclusion, we did have great riding weather and rode some very beautiful scenic roads. We had a good time in spite of the mis-directions by me and the GPS. I will definitely need to resolve the GPS issues.

10 Days, 2035 Miles, With Thousands And Thousands of Twisties: Trail of Tears & Harrison, AR Motorcycle Ride

Our route

Trail of Tears & Harrison, AR Motorcycle Ride

Every September we try to meet our friends from Alabama and Georgia who ride the “Trail of Tears”  motorcycle ride. We meet them either in Hot Springs Arkansas or at the trail end in Oklahoma somewhere. I say somewhere in Oklahoma because the “Trail of Tears” ride ends in different places each year. This year we met them at trail end in Wewoka, OK the home of the Seminole Nation Museum and where the closing ceremonies for the “Trail of Tears” ride took place. From there we road to Harrison, AR and took three days riding the many twisty, scenic motorcycle roads around Harrison. On our return trip home we took advantage of visiting relatives along the way and eating Aunt Imogene’s coconut cream pie… Aunt Imogene probably thinks that is my only reason for visiting…

It was a great ride with great friends, supporting a great cause, great scenery, great twisty roads and for the most part good weather.
