The Hazards of Riding a Motorcycle 100 Years Ago

From the “Yesteryears” column of “The Williamson County Sun” of Georgetown, Texas on April 23, 2014

“Pair of mules scares motorcyclist during ride”

APRIL 23, 1914

“Sidney Purl passed through Florence last Sunday; en route to Young-sport to visit Esq. Ray; who is reported very frail. Sid reports a very exciting as well as dangerous experience on his way up. He was riding a motorcycle and he states he passed a four-horse team on the road. The team seemed a bit excited, but he got by it all okay; and he thought all was going well when he happened to look back and see close behind him a pair of mules with all their harness coming at full speed. He says he tried to pick up speed, but was too late. The mules spread out on either side of him and Sid says he ducked his head and trusted to Providence for luck, and it came. The mules passed him without an accident, but he was so badly scared that he and his wheel collapsed in a heap by the roadside soon as the team had passed.”

This was in the local newspaper “The Williamson County Sun”. They run stories under the heading “Yesteryears” of news from past years that happened on the day of publishing. For a motorcyclist of today, this is just too funny to not share. The hazards of riding a motorcycle 100 tears ago.

Aren’t you glad we don’t have to worry much about being run over by a team of mules these days…

Ride safe and I hope I see you on the road somewhere…

Court House at Buffalo Gap Museum

When we left Lamesa there was a light rain and the temp. was in the low 50’s. We rode to Buffalo Gap just south of Abilene. Buffalo Gap has a Historic Village with building from different periods of the area history. It’s a self guided tour where you can walk through an old court-house w/jail, log cabin, schoolhouse, chapel, blacksmith shop, doctor and dentist office, train depot and many more. We ate lunch at the BBQ Barn. The food was good but not very hot.

Restored officer quarters Ft. Chadbourne

We rode on to Ft. Chadbourne. Janet and I have been there two other times and every time we were treated very special by all the staff. The fort is on private land and the owner’s family has lived on the land since sometime in the 1800’s. Ft. Chadbourne is being restored with private funds with no help from the government (what a novel idea). The work they have done is rather remarkable. We can’t wait to go back and see what they have done since last time. The owner also rides motorcycles so we had to talk to him about riding in Big Bend. Currently they have completed one officer’s quarters, a small house, part of the barracks and are almost done with the Butterfield Stage Stop.

We got an early start and headed up Hwy 54 from Van Horn to the Guadalupe Mountains National Park. This road was in the words of Janet “an awesome road”. The scenery was incredible. We stopped at a picnic area to take pictures of El Capitan the highest peak (8749’) in Texas. From the headquarters we walked a nature trail to some ruins of what once was a “Butterfield Stage Stop”

Carlsbad Caverns National Park Natural Entrance

From there we rode on to Carlsbad Cavern National Park and did a self guided tour of the cavern. Janet and I had been there in the early nineties but forgot the road to the cavern was so pretty… Again, a nice motorcycle road. We spent about 4 hours at the cavern. After the tour we ate lunch at the caverns. The food was great and the cost reasonable. I also found out once you turn 62 (yeah, I’m that old) for $10 you can get a lifetime pass to all national parks. With this pass you get to bring 3 other people with you. So now we need to start looking at going to more national parks… Free is good.

Leaving Carlsbad Caverns National Park

From there we rode on to Lamesa, Texas. This was the only day it had got hot. I think it was Hobbs, New Mexico on one of the bank signs the temperature read 98 degrees. It wasn’t too bad (dry heat) compared to some of the heat we had just had back home in Georgetown.

Today was another good riding day. The temperature started cool gradually warming to hot but all in all it was a good day…  Great scenery riding with great friends. Lamesa was nice trails end.

Tomorrow we head to San Angelo, Texas. Come ride along and share the fun with us.

The window at Chisos Basin

We had breakfast, before heading out back down the mountain, at the Lodge Restaurant. Breakfast was good as was all the food we have eaten at the Lodge over the years. Then it was on to Van Horn via Study Butte, Terlingua, Lajitas, Presidio and Marfa. Highway 170 from Study Butte to Presidio has always been regarded as one of the top ten best roads to ride in Texas, and today we were not disappointed. Though we have ridden this road before I still anticipated riding it again. It is a nice motorcycle road because of the scenery and all the ups and downs and curves.

Old movies set on Rio Grande

Along the way we stopped to see the Contrabando movie set where several western movies were filmed. Last year in September the Rio Grande flooded and the flood had ruined a lot of the set but it was still a nice stop.

Ft. Leaton

Next stop was Ft. Leaton, which was actually a trading post. There wasn’t much as far as exhibits so we did a lot of guessing about what parts of the fort were. It was still interesting though.

El Patio Restaurant in Presidio

We ate lunch at the El Patio Mexican Restaurant in Presidio. We ate there 2 years ago and the food was great but of course you would expect it to be great being a border town. We were not disappointed this time either.

From Presidio it was on to Marfa up Hwy.67. We gassed up in Marfa and took Hwy 90 to Van Horn. We have never traveled that hwy to Van Horn before. It was basically flat and for the most part straight. You could see hills and mountains in the distance but it was just good ranch land as far as you could see.

Van Horn today is mostly, from what we have seen of it, a good stopping point along I-10. It has about 15 motels and several gas stations. There we several things to see in Van Horn but we didn’t get there early enough to do any of those things.

Van Horn’s motto is “Van Horn is so healthy they had to shoot someone to start a cemetery.” The man who said that was shot and killed not long afterward. True

story…

Tomorrow we head to Lamesa, Texas via Carlsbad National Park. Come ride along and share the fun with us.

Jo had us all up by 5:30 am (6:30 Georgia time) this morning. She mistakenly thought we were leaving for breakfast at 6:00am. As it turned out, nothing was open until 7:00am.

We ate breakfast at Johnny B’s. The food was good. It was just a small hole in the wall where the waitress knew everyone by name and the cook knew what they wanted before they even sat down to order.

While we were eating we noticed a commotion out front. We came to find out, George and Laura Bush were staying at the Gage Hotel, just up the street. Evidently the Bush’s were leaving the hotel to visit a nearby ranch. The waitress said they would be staying at the Gage Hotel for several days. It was kind of exciting to know a former president was just a few feet away.

Greenhouse of a Bed & Breakfast in Marathon

After breakfast, we walked to the Gage Hotel to take pictures and walk around. The shops were still closed by this time so we went back to the Carriage House. On the way back Shirley noticed a strange-looking building and decided to investigate. On the way there, we met two local women who were out walking. They explained to us that the building was part of a Bed & Breakfast. Someone had come in and bought an old house and renovated it to turn it into a Bead & Breakfast. They had made it into a kind of Spanish style structure and painted it red, blue and yellow. They just started adding on to it using the same color scheme. The structure now under construction was two stories high and made of papercrete.

One of the women was upset because it blocked her view of the mountains. She has lived in her home for 75 years and liked to look at the mountains to determine the weather. Her home was over 100 years old. We had a nice visit with the two women. From there we walked to the Bed & Breakfast and looked around. It was a strange-looking place but they did have a “green thumb” because the green house was beautiful.

After that we walked over to a bookstore where Janet bought Hallie Stillwell’s second book “My Goose Is Cooked” and a book about Texas Ranger John Rogers.

Then we loaded up and headed for the Stillwell Store & RV Park. There is a museum in honor of Hallie Stillwell. She was a local character who died in 1997 at the age of 99. The RV Park and store are on the ranch Hallie and her husband owned. Her granddaughter, who shared a few stories about Hallie before we toured the museum, runs the store and RV Park. Hallie led a very hard but interesting Life.

Restaurant at Chisos Basin Lodge

Our next stop was Chisos Basin in Big Bend National Park. At an altitude of 5,400′ and surrounded by high, rocky cliffs. Chisos Basin is near some of the park’s most spectacular and popular trails – the Lost Mine Trail, the Window Trail, the South Rim Trail, and the Pinnacles Trail, with its access to the park’s highest point, Emory Peak (elev. 7,825′). Also in the Basin area is the Chisos Basin Visitor Center, the Camper Store, and the Chisos Basin Lodge, which houses the only restaurant in Big Bend National Park.

Where we stayed at in Chisos Basin Lodge with Mt. Casa Grande in background

We stayed in a cottage with three beds and one bath. It was quite cozy. Outside the cottage was a beautiful view of the “Window”. The “Window” is a view between two mountains. Shirley aptly named it “The Lords Window”.

We had lunch at The Lodge and as usual the food was great. The Lodge has glass walls on three sides so you get a great view of the surrounding area.

Tomorrow we head to Van Horn, Texas. Come ride along and share the fun with us.
